Green Day

Some of you might be thinking about the band (I was too) and I’m terribly sorry to disappoint if you were expecting this to be a post about the latter. However, this is about something much more exciting. Last week (13th – 20th May 2019) was mental health awareness week and loads of people were doing lots of different things all around the UK to help raise awareness.

I did as much asI could myself to raise as much awareness of the issue as I could. However, as an individual, that is difficult. I was able to speak to some of my peers at school about how we can improve mental health support in school. People gave me some fantastic ideas and I will be campaigning over the next few weeks to see them carried out.

However, simply doing things for individuals won’t be enough to raise the sort of awareness that we need. Mental health is a huge problem in the modern day world and it’s quite a taboo subject. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 40 in the UK. I understand that it’s being spoken about more yet, I feel as if we can do more as individuals.

Taking this into consideration, I asked my manager at work if we could do something to support the awareness during the week. I came up with the idea of wearing green considering the colour of the week this year was green. The week was based around body image so we all wore green to show people that we are accepting and open human beings who support everything and everyone.

I was truly overwhelmed by the support of all my colleagues who ALL wore green AND donated a small amount towards MIND UK. In the end, we were able to raise £40 which will go to a truly wonderful cause. I have been involved with the charity myself and they are an amazing organisation who support people who have difficulties with their mental health. This is why we decided to donate to them.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the awareness week. Whether you wore a pin or did something on a larger scale, you ARE making a huge difference. Also, a special thank you to the 891 family for pulling together and supporting the amazing cause.

Little by little, we will be able to encourage people to speak up and help them in tough times.
